New Memoir Womanslaughter Reveals the Human Cost of Maternal Mortality and the Extraordinary Difference One Person Can Make

A powerful true story of compassion, courage, and a global mission to save mothers’ lives.

Maternal mortality remains one of the world’s most urgent yet overlooked humanitarian challenges. In her compelling new memoir, Womanslaughter: A Personal Journey Through the Tragedy of Maternal Mortality, author and humanitarian Angela Gorman, MBE takes readers beyond the headlines to witness the realities faced by women, doctors, and families living where pregnancy can become a life or death struggle.

Angela’s remarkable journey began after watching a television documentary about women dying from preventable childbirth complications in Chad. As an experienced neonatal nurse, she recognised that many of these deaths could have been prevented with access to basic medication, trained healthcare professionals, and essential medical equipment.

Instead of moving on, Angela chose to act.

What started with a single email soon developed into an international humanitarian mission. Through fundraising, partnerships with healthcare organisations, and repeated visits to Africa, she helped deliver lifesaving medical supplies, supported healthcare professionals, and advocated tirelessly for safer maternity care. Along the way, she witnessed heartbreaking loss, inspiring resilience, and the remarkable dedication of medical teams working under some of the most challenging conditions imaginable.

Womanslaughter is far more than a memoir. It is a deeply personal account that exposes the inequalities surrounding maternal healthcare while celebrating the resilience of those determined to create change. Angela shares unforgettable experiences from hospitals in Africa, introducing readers to mothers, babies, doctors, midwives, and communities whose stories demonstrate both the devastating consequences of limited healthcare and the hope that emerges when people unite around a common purpose.

The book offers an inspiring reminder that meaningful change does not always begin with governments or large organisations. Sometimes it begins with one individual who refuses to ignore injustice and decides to make a difference.

Readers interested in healthcare, humanitarian work, women’s rights, nursing, global development, and inspiring true stories will find Womanslaughter both informative and emotionally powerful. It encourages thoughtful discussion about maternal health while demonstrating how determination, compassion, and practical action can transform countless lives.
