Birth marks an extraordinary period of reproductive success and reflects the Ranch’s long-term commitment to rhino conservation

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is celebrating the birth of its third southern white rhinoceros calf in three years, an extraordinary conservation and animal-care milestone for a species that remains challenging to breed consistently under human care.

The female calf, named Twuda, was born Tuesday, Sept. 8, to Gertie and Kutu. Based on early estimates, Twuda weighed about 150 pounds and measured approximately 28 inches tall and 36 inches long at birth.

The birth is among fewer than 10 southern white rhino births publicly documented at U.S. facilities so far in 2026. That small number underscores the significance of the Ranch’s achievement: three calves in three years after more than two decades of work toward its first successful southern white rhino birth.

Southern white rhino births are relatively uncommon because the species reproduces slowly and many animals in zoological settings never produce offspring. Research has found that only about one-third of southern white rhinos living in zoological settings reproduce during their lifetimes. Pregnancy lasts approximately 15 to 16 months, typically results in one calf, and females generally have several years between births.

“A southern white rhino birth is the result of years of attentive care and informed decision-making,” said Dr. Stephen Momberg, Director of Veterinary Care & Research Programs for Save the Giraffes and a wildlife veterinarian who conducts research at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. “The timing, herd dynamics, genetics, nutrition, space, and long-term management all have to work together. Three calves in three years is a meaningful indication that the Ranch has established the conditions needed for sustained reproductive success.”

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch welcomed its first southern white rhino calf in late 2023 after working toward successful rhino reproduction for more than 20 years. Two additional calves within the next three years have turned that first breakthrough into the foundation of a sustained breeding program.

The achievement comes at a consequential time for rhinos in the wild. The International Rhino Foundation estimates that approximately 15,752 white rhinos remain across 11 African countries, down from 17,464 in 2023. Poaching remains the greatest threat, while habitat pressures, drought, and increasingly fragmented populations add to the species’ vulnerability.

Managed breeding programs do not replace the urgent work of protecting rhinos in their native range. They do, however, help maintain a healthy and genetically sustainable population under professional care while supporting conservation education, veterinary knowledge, research, and collaboration.
