BEAVERCREEK, OH, UNITED STATES, October 8, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — A Distinguished Career Centered on Empathy, Service, and Integrated Mental Health and Addiction Treatment
Beavercreek, Ohio – Carin Burr has built a distinguished career at the intersection of behavioral health, clinical practice, and higher education, bringing decades of experience to her work as a professor at Clark State College. Dually licensed in mental health and addiction studies since 1995, she has dedicated her professional journey to helping others while preparing future professionals to address complex behavioral health needs.
Carin began her career as a therapist and treatment provider, working across various clinical agencies before founding Connections Counseling Services. From 2001 to 2008, she provided direct care through her private practice while also developing her role in academia. Her transition into higher education began in 2001 when she joined Clark State College as a part-time instructor. In 2005, she became full-time faculty in the social work and addictions studies department.
Throughout her career, Carin has developed expertise in co-occurring disorders, trauma-informed care, and integrated mental health and addiction treatment. Her commitment to education and workforce preparation played a key role in the development and launch of Ohio’s first bachelor’s degree program focused on co-occurring disorders. The program was approved in 2022 and has already supported numerous students pursuing advanced clinical training.
For Carin, the foundation of her professional success can be traced to values instilled early in life. She grew up with a father who taught her and her family to lift other people. There was always somebody who needed help, and the idea of service became a lasting source of inspiration. She also learned to hone her natural empathy skills, emphasizing empathy, genuineness, and positive regard in her work with students.
Her philosophy toward career development is similarly grounded in authenticity. Carin believes in letting things unfold and following the path that develops rather than attempting to plan too far ahead in a people-centered field. She encourages individuals to love what they do and remain committed to meaningful work.
Carin also emphasizes the importance of self-care for professionals working in behavioral health. She recognizes the emotional toll associated with secondary trauma and encourages those entering the industry to prioritize their well-being. She particularly stresses the importance of taking regular breaks and, for those in recovery, ensuring that recovery always comes first.
Beyond the classroom and clinical environment, Carin has maintained active involvement in professional and service organizations, including the Ohio Counseling Association, the Bio Forensic Counselors Association, and the National Consortium of Reciprocity. She has also participated in community and recovery-focused initiatives such as Families of Addicts and COPE, while engaging in trauma recovery advocacy through the City Lookout Trauma Recovery Center.
Recently retired from full-time teaching, Carin continues contributing as an adjunct instructor and consultant. She remains attentive to challenges affecting behavioral health, including budget cuts and funding issues and the potential impact of Medicaid reductions on access to services. She believes programs must maintain their internal integrity while partnering with the medical community without being taken over.
Across her clinical, educational, and service work, Carin continues to center her professional philosophy on lifting people up. Her commitment to empathy, genuineness, positive regard, and service remains central to the way she supports students, colleagues, and the broader behavioral health community.
