Torus has been named Battery Manufacturer of the Year at the 2026 Battery Awards citing its innovative hybrid design and GigaOne, the company’s 545,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Salt Lake City. Presented at The Battery Show North America in Detroit, the award recognizes outstanding performance in production scale, quality, and innovation.
GigaOne began production in early 2026 and is expanding toward its goal of manufacturing energy storage systems totaling one gigawatt of nameplate power capacity annually. By July, the plant was setting weekly production records. During its ramp-up, Torus has opened new production lines at a pace of roughly one every 21 days.
GigaOne manufactures Torus Station, a hybrid energy storage system that pairs the Torus Spin flywheel with the Torus Pulse lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Torus Spin, a mechanical battery, responds to changes in power demand in milliseconds and absorbs high-frequency, high-cycle duty. Torus Pulse houses chemical batteries and supplies sustained energy over longer durations. By dividing the work between mechanical and chemical storage, the system handles fast, frequent power fluctuations while reducing wear on the batteries.
Installed close to the point of consumption, Torus Station enables utilities and commercial and industrial (C&I) customers to manage peak demand, stabilize voltage and frequency, and increase utilization of existing grid infrastructure.
“We believed we could build energy storage at this scale right here in Utah,” said Nate Walkingshaw, founder and CEO of Torus. “That’s why we love having people visit and walk through GigaOne to experience it for themselves. This award belongs to our team and our local suppliers who made it possible to ramp up quickly.”
GigaOne has helped Torus expand its workforce from 88 employees at the beginning of 2025 to nearly 400 today. The company operates three Utah facilities and launched a tuition-free technician onboarding program with Salt Lake Community College in June 2026.
Torus has also earned recognition for workplace safety as it grows. In September, the Utah Safety Council presented Torus with its Perfect Record Award and Award of Merit. Additional awards include TIME’s Best Invention award, the R&D 100 Award for innovation, Reuters Energy Storage, and Fast Company’s Next Best Thing in Tech 2026.
